Not allowing Juror #2 to be released in theaters is another crime we can add to Warner Bros.’ illustrious list of accomplishments, because Clint Eastwood, at 94, still has it. A riveting and thoroughly immersive examination of guilt, justice, and the limits of American law that Eastwood has been obsessed with throughout his career, the suspense is simply unbearable.
Eastwood’s intense and surprising direction is here, all set to a very impressive score by Mark Mancina, but it’s really the performances that had me on edge for the duration of the film’s run. Nicholas Hoult never fails to deliver a searing torture beneath the surface, conveying an inner terror to the viewer but not to those around him. Simmons delivers equally wonderful performances, and honestly, I’m a little disappointed that Kiefer Sutherland’s role is so limited.
If, like the gunslingers of his past, Juror #2 ends up being Eastwood’s final film (as terrifying as that thought is), the man has gone out in triumphant glory. Find out what movies and TV shows are streaming this month.
