A mother is forced to rethink herself when her family’s life is destroyed by an act of arbitrary violence during the tightening of the military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971. Selected by the Brazilian Film Academy to compete for Best International Film at the 2025 Oscars.. Eunice Paiva: Martha, you must help me.
Shown in Mais Você: Episode from December 3, 2024 (2024). A Festa do Santo Reis Screenplay by Leo Maia (played by Marcio Leonardo) Performed by Tim Maia. “I’m still here” is a film about a time when fear, censorship and torture reigned in the history of Brazil, a time that should never return.
However, director Walter Salles develops the theme delicately, presenting us with a close-knit and loving family that yearns for the return of its missing father and husband. You can empathize with Eunice’s pain in many moments, and also imagine how cruel the military dictatorship was. There are bittersweet moments in the film, and it creates a place where you feel close to this family, a place full of affection and tenderness.
The entire cast is magnificent, and we also have the sublime Fernando Montenegro as the grown-up Eunice Paiva. The film is technically beautiful, with a stunning representation of Rio de Janeiro in the 70s. I think I’m echoing the opinion of many Brazilians when I say that it would be very important if Brazil were nominated for an Oscar with this film, but regardless, it’s definitely a must-see, a recent masterpiece of Brazilian cinema that raises awareness , delights and can even bring you to tears.
