Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to the dangerous London underworld, Helen's employer's call in Sam to protect her.. Bingo, the owner of the guitar store where Sam gets his weapons, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the classic punk band The Damned..
Meet Helen Dawson (Keira Knightley) just a normal mother of two who's married to a politician, right? Wrong, she's actually been a spy since just before she met the politician and has been giving country secrets to a spy organization called The Black Doves and they've been selling it to the highest bidder for years.
Unfortunately for Helen's boss, Helen's new lover is killed and when Helen's new lover is killed she goes on a mission of vegence to find his killer. And she also gets caught up in plenty of gun fights (that reminded me of Shoot 'em Up and John Wick), hand to hand fights (which showed she's definitely not a damsel in distress) and explosive lucky escapes (that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.) It's these great action scenes that kept me very interested throughout the series.
And I didn't even find myself bored during the flashback scenes which showed how Helen first got into spying, because even these scenes had good shoot outs.I also enjoyed the witty one liners that both Helen and her spy partner Sam (Ben Whishaw) deliver very well. After doing so Sam says, "That was quite impressive." And Helen says, "You should have seen me when I pushed two human beings out of myself in the same afternoon." However even though I was never bored and I definitely didn't feel like this series was too drawn out and would have done better as a long film, I do think the last episode could have been about 10-20 minutes shorter and towards the end of the series I did think it was a bit too complicated.
I understand that they were trying to set up the last episode for a 2nd series but I still think they could have done this of they had made the series a little shorter. husband, Wallace, (Andrew Buchan) needs to be portrayed as a stronger character, because throughout the series Helen has to keep sneaking off to investigate her lover's murder, but even when Wallace starts to get suspicious, at the end of the series, he never confronts her about her secrecy.Despite these minor issues I would definitely watch a 2nd series and would also happily watch this series again and buy it on DVD..
