Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, “The Cleansed” is Lina Wertmuller’s most famous and controversial film about sex, love and politics. On an elegant yacht sailing off the coast of Sardinia, the wealthy and beautiful capitalist Raffaella (Mariangela Melato) enjoys torturing the communist sailor Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini). Fate weaves a different scenario and the roles are reversed when the two find themselves stranded on a deserted island together. Raffaella must obey Gennarino in order to survive, which culminates in a dramatic climax when they are rescued. They must decide whether their love can survive the harsh realities of civilization.
